Seeing Shape

seeingshape

I had been cutting hair for six or seven years when I was first prescribed my bifocals. By that time, I was booked two weeks in advance. The first haircut I did wearing them was the first time I saw hair. I realized that before then, all I saw was shape. That’s a pretty big thing to realize, you see. How the heck could I get away each cut without seeing individual hairs?!
I’ve learned since then that I was successful because a haircut is not about seeing individual strands of hair. It’s about shape, texture and aesthetic. Once I started wearing glasses, I found myself squinting at the final result to make it blurry and see only shape. Try it. Try it, whatever your medium. Take out the little details, and you’ll be surprised what you find.
